Windshield Repair

There are a number of companies offering kits to launch your own windshield repair business. This type of business has a low startup cost with kits normally in the $300 range and up. Some places charge several hundred for a repair kit, then try to up sell you other materials or training costing thousands of dollars.

One problem is that many states have mandatory laws requiring auto insurance to always cover the price of windshield repair or replacement, and given the option, most people will take it to a glass installer for a brand new replacement rather than finding someone to simply repair a small rock chip or crack.

The sales copy is typical of most places, promising $50-$100 an hour. The problem with that is I cannot imagine finding that much work for a windshield repair business when people can have it replaced usually at no cost to them (not even a deductible) in most states. It makes it rather a hard sell.

One option with the startup of your business is be to contract with companies who have fleets or repair shops who want to out source the glass work. Many places will not pay top dollar in exchange for an exclusive contract, and they will almost always require experience and references. This leaves having to advertise locally, often at significant cost and often with little return, since it must all be within reasonable driving distance.

All in all, when it comes to a windshield repair business, many other more profitable businesses come to mind. I would only recommend a windshield repair business to someone with experience in the field of automotive glass installation and glazing, and who already has contacts with local businesses. If you're new to business then I don't recommend a windshield repair business. Perhaps someone who is already in automotive repair would branch into this, and add to their income.
